Manchester United 2-1 Atlético Madrid: Mbeumo Leads Stunning Comeback in Stockholm



Manchester United continued their encouraging pre-season preparations with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Atlético Madrid at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm. After falling behind early in the first half, Ruben Amorim’s side showed resilience and attacking quality to complete an impressive second-half comeback, with new signing Bryan Mbeumo scoring twice to seal the win. 



Atlético Strike First



The match got off to the worst possible start for Manchester United. Atlético Madrid capitalised on a defensive lapse just five minutes into the game as Arnau Ortiz found the back of the net to give Diego Simeone’s men an early 1-0 lead. United’s defence was caught out, leaving goalkeeper Tom Heaton with little chance of preventing the opener. 


Despite conceding early, United refused to panic. They gradually settled into the contest, dominating possession and creating several promising attacks. Mason Mount controlled the tempo from midfield, while youngster Shea Lacey impressed with his creativity and fearless approach in the final third. 



Mbeumo Sparks the Comeback



Manchester United’s persistence was finally rewarded shortly after the restart. Shea Lacey won a penalty after a clever run into the Atlético penalty area, and summer signing Bryan Mbeumo confidently stepped up to send the goalkeeper the wrong way, levelling the score at 1-1. 


The equaliser completely changed the momentum of the match. United looked sharper, pressed higher up the pitch and moved the ball with greater confidence, forcing Atlético onto the defensive.



Mbeumo Completes the Turnaround



United’s winning goal arrived midway through the second half. Academy midfielder Jack Fletcher produced an excellent pass to release Mbeumo, who kept his composure before finishing clinically to score his second goal of the afternoon. The strike capped an outstanding individual display and highlighted why Manchester United were eager to bring him to Old Trafford. 



Youngsters Continue to Impress



One of the biggest positives for Ruben Amorim was the performance of several young players.


Shea Lacey was one of the standout performers throughout the game. Operating behind the striker, he constantly found pockets of space, created chances and won the penalty that brought United level. His confidence on the ball and willingness to take on defenders earned praise from supporters. 


Defender Ayden Heaven also delivered another composed display, while Jack Fletcher made an immediate impact after coming off the bench by providing the assist for the winning goal. 



Mount Continues Strong Pre-season



Mason Mount continued his impressive form during United’s pre-season campaign. The midfielder linked play effectively, pressed aggressively and helped drive United forward whenever they regained possession. His sharpness and movement suggested he is building confidence ahead of the new Premier League season. 



Defensive Lessons



Although the result was positive, Amorim will know there is still work to be done defensively. United conceded from one of Atlético’s first attacks and occasionally looked vulnerable when defending quick transitions. However, the team’s response after going behind showed improved mentality and determination. 



A Positive Step Forward



The victory over Atlético Madrid was another encouraging step in Manchester United’s preparations for the 2026/27 campaign. Bryan Mbeumo announced himself with a brilliant brace, the academy players continued to impress, and the team demonstrated resilience by coming from behind against one of Europe’s toughest opponents.


While pre-season results are not the ultimate priority, performances like this will give Ruben Amorim confidence that his squad is steadily adapting to his ideas. With more friendlies still to come, United supporters will be hoping this momentum carries into the competitive season as the club aims to challenge for silverware.
